“Being told that I had cancer, I felt relieved. I finally had an answer. But I was very disappointed because all the doctors had fired me and very, very angry,” she told People.
A young woman’s excessive itching was dismissed by many doctors. Even though she felt helpless, she never gave up – and eventually diagnosed herself with cancer.
Sumbul Ari exclusively told PEOPLE that she was “fit, healthy and very active with a background of half-marathon running, weightlifting and indoor rowing” before her symptoms began.
“I commit to going to the gym six days a week, I have never smoked or drank excessively, I sleep eight to nine hours a night, and I rarely get sick,” she explains. “I’ve never had health problems before and regular blood tests, done every year, have always been normal.”
When the itching first started, Ari, 26, says, “At first I thought I was reacting to something — perfume, deodorant, laundry products, bath products. I started the removal process, but nothing helped.”
She also suffered from “night sweats” and “acne,” so Ari attributed them to “hormonal changes.” But when more symptoms appeared, including fatigue, loss of appetite, voice changes that lasted for weeks, recurring skin infections and brain fog, Ari knew it had to be something more serious.

“I went to my first doctor after two months of extreme itching. I told him I would wake up in the middle of the night and scratch myself to death because it felt like something was crawling on my skin,” Ari recalls.
Detailing that she “didn’t have a rash,” Aril told PEOPLE that the medical professional responded with a less than ideal solution. “He told me, ‘Moisturize your skin. Maybe it’s just dry skin,’ and he blamed it on the hot, humid climate,” she said.
When she saw a second doctor, this time for an infection, Ari said she mentioned her persistent symptoms and was treated for the infection and scabies. But when she returned two days later with the problem still unresolved, Ari said the doctor also ignored her symptoms.
“I will never forget the exact words: ‘It’s just one of those things,’” she recalls.

With her problems continuing — and even though her blood work came back “completely normal and within range” — Ari admitted, “Honestly, I gave up.” Still, she looked into her symptoms herself, finding what she described as a “nightly Reddit rabbit hole.”
She told PEOPLE: “I suspected mold, I searched the house and removed any mold. I suspected foot fungus, tried home remedies I found on Reddit. Nothing. I tried creams, antihistamines, sleeping pills: nothing worked.”
Ari eventually went to more doctors — one when she thought she had parasites and another where she sought antibiotics — and during a colonoscopy with a practitioner, a naturopath, she received help that made her “finally feel like things were looking up.”
However, “after three weeks, I noticed the itching returned and this time it was worse,” Ari said.

At that time, Ari also had a lump on his neck. When she Googled to find out, the results changed everything. “As soon as I read about itchy skin, night sweats and fatigue, I knew I had cancer,” she told People.
Finally, after several visits to the doctor, her self-diagnosis was confirmed to be Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. “I don’t care if it’s cancer or not, I just want the itching to stop and I want to have a full night’s sleep,” she said. “At that point, I was so emotionally, mentally and physically exhausted. I was at my absolute breaking point.”
“Being told I had cancer, I felt relieved. I finally had an answer,” Ari continued. “But I was very disappointed because all the doctors fired me and very, very angry.”
She added, “There’s nothing more frustrating than knowing something is terribly wrong but being ignored by those who should be helping.”

Ari is currently undergoing chemotherapy treatment. “Since my first chemotherapy session, all the symptoms I had have disappeared,” she said. “I can’t believe I’m saying this, but I sleep every night like a baby and no longer scratch.”
Ari added: “Every morning when I wake up, I’m grateful for a full night’s sleep.” “I forgot what it felt like to wake up well-rested.”
She continued: “I’ve felt really good since the chemo. I’ve had no nausea, side effects, reactions or sickness. A little tired but I just took a quick nap.”
Ari, who works as a user-generated content creator and event content creator, said she remains active. “I am moving my body every day, walking, running, rowing, eating healthy, drinking lots of water, sleeping well and of course staying positive,” she explains.

Looking at his health journey, Ari told PEOPLE: “I finally had the answer because I kept advocating for myself, even though no one was listening.”
“Never stop defending yourself when you know something is deeply wrong,” she continued. “Keep trying until someone listens.”
Ari added: “I started to believe that life wasn’t worth living and that I really couldn’t go on anymore. And then my answer came, which I’m so grateful for. Don’t give up.”
As for advice for those who are currently facing or may face a similar situation in the future, Ari says: “Let go of the pressure, the timelines, and the expectations you once placed on yourself. You don’t have to take on everything right now. This is the time to be ‘selfish’ in the best way possible – focusing on healing, peace, and regulating your nervous system without guilt.”
“I’ve learned that when you let things go, what’s truly important becomes clear. So focus on taking each day as it comes. Be present, lean on those you love, and allow yourself to rest without feeling like you’re falling behind,” she continued. “You’re not falling behind, you’re just being asked to go through life differently right now and that’s more than okay.”
